The Next Solar Challenge: Recycling the Toxic Panels

Solar panels were supposed to be the solution to help generate environmentally friendly power but now they are becoming a major problem themselves, according to a recent article published in the LA Times. As solar panels get older, they become less efficient and need to be replaced. And when they come off roofs, there are not enough recycling options to process them.

Many solar panels are being disposed of with trash and that is a huge issue for groundwater contamination. The major issue with recycling the panels is that the recycled materials are hard to extract and the cost to process is recycled them is much higher than simply dumping them.

So what can be done about this growing problem? One solution is for manufacturers to develop new recycling methods that are more economically feasible. But until then, it’s important for everyone to do their part in disposing of solar panels properly so we can minimize the environmental impact and help reduce the negative impact on our groundwater. Many homes in the USA have now adopted the technology and many more are expected to add solar panels over the next 20 years.

It is crucial that we have a plan to recycle these panels when they come to the end of their lifespan. With your help, we can make sure that solar panels are part of the solution and not part of the problem. Our goal with this article is not to incite a panic, but, to inform of the toxic issue so consumers are aware. Perhaps storage of the panels instead of throwing them in the garbage will help buy time until the recycling technology can catch up with demand?

Solar power is a renewable resource that can help reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, but the positive impact will be negated if the solar panels are not recycled properly. You can make a difference by disposing of your old solar panels properly and supporting manufacturers who recycle solar panels. Together, we can ensure that solar power is part of the solution for a sustainable future.

If you are unsure of what to do with your old solar panels, please contact the manufacturer for more instructions. Many manufacturers have committed to helping consumers recycle their products and they will be able to guide you through the process. We all need to do our part in preserving our planet for future generations and recycling is a great way to start!

We do not currently recycle solar panels here at OERC, however we are looking into it and as technology advancements are developed we look forward to helping with this problem directly in the future.
